My aim as a teacher is to inspire in my students a love of music and piano playing that will last a life-time. My primary pleasure in teaching is in discovering, and adapting to, every individual's learning strengths. As a student of mine, you can always be sure of a fresh approach adapted to your specific skills and abilities, and not just a pre-determined schedule. I hope to bring into every lesson the creativity and pleasure I experience as a peformer and to help you fulfill your potential.
Specifically, I will:
- introduce you to some wonderful music
- provide a positive, friendly environment that will help you achieve your best
- be sensitive to your best learning method and teach at your pace
- help you with methods to overcome "nerves" or "anxiety" when you play
- be supportive of all your ambitions and aspirations
- always welcome your feedback: comments, criticisms, advice, and of course, praise!
I will also help to:
- develop musicality and technique through "real" music, not just exercises
- develop aural awareness in addition to playing ability
- nurture and expand skills of concentration, memory, commitment, and perseverence
- encourage you to listen to other music related to the pieces you play
- show you how to practise so you become your own teacher!
- encourage you to be pleased with what you have acheived!
I won't:
- shout at you for making mistakes!
- make you play exercises or scales the whole lesson!
- force you you to take exams
-
work on ten seconds of a piece for the whole lesson!
- slam the piano lid on your fingers if you can't play the whole piece after one week!
Finally, I also believe that performance can be an amazing experience - that playing for other people is not something to be terrified of doing! (I do quite a lot of it myself!) This is why I arrange regular informal/fun concerts to offer all my students the opportunity to perform (should they wish to) to a warm, appreciative audience of family and friends. These concerts are always hugely popular, not least because of the home-made refreshments!!
